Brighton train cancelled? A practical backup plan for Gatwick, London and Heathrow
What to check first, how rail replacement and ticket acceptance work, when an airport passenger should change plan, and what to record for refunds or Delay Repay.

The first ten minutes after a cancellation
Should you wait, reroute or book a taxi?
Wait or use the railway plan when the operator has a clear alternative that still protects your deadline.
Consider a taxi when the remaining rail plan is uncertain, the replacement requires difficult changes, or your flight and luggage make delay risk unacceptable.
Do not assume reimbursement for a taxi you arrange yourself. Ask railway staff or the operator before spending money and record any authorisation.
| Situation | Best first move | Taxi may make sense when |
|---|---|---|
| No fixed deadline | Follow the operator’s alternative or wait for the next service. | The delay becomes excessive or the final connection will be missed. |
| Gatwick flight | Check the remaining time to airline check-in and a direct rail alternative. | The rail plan no longer gives a sensible airport margin. |
| Heathrow flight | Recalculate the entire train and London connection, not just Brighton to London. | Changes and uncertainty threaten the terminal arrival target. |
| London meeting | Ask whether tickets are accepted via another route or London terminal. | Door-to-door arrival is more valuable than reaching a different London station. |
| Reduced mobility | Contact station staff or Passenger Assist for an accessible alternative. | The operator agrees or an independently arranged accessible journey is necessary and suitable. |
If the cancelled train connects to a flight
Do not work from the flight departure alone. Find the time your airline requires you at the terminal, then compare that deadline with each available travel plan.
Brighton to Gatwick
A direct train can be efficient when the Brighton Main Line is operating, but disruption around Haywards Heath, Balcombe, Three Bridges or Gatwick can affect the route. A road transfer also uses the A23/M23 corridor, so it is not immune to traffic. Check rail and road information before deciding.
Brighton or Sussex to Heathrow
Rail travel often involves London or another interchange. Count every change, cross-London transfer and the trip to the correct Heathrow terminal. A direct private hire journey can simplify luggage and connections, but M25 conditions require a buffer.
Call the airline when the margin is gone
A taxi cannot recover unlimited lost time. If check-in is likely to be missed, contact the airline immediately to understand the available options rather than assuming faster driving will solve the problem.
Ticket use, refunds and Delay Repay
Rules depend on the ticket, operator and type of disruption. Use the current operator page rather than relying on a screenshot from a previous incident.
Alternative trains
Thameslink’s current refund guidance says that when a train is cancelled and the passenger still wants to travel, tickets may be accepted on publicly owned operators by a reasonable route within stated time limits. Ticket-specific conditions still matter, so confirm the permitted route in the live disruption notice or with staff.
If you decide not to travel
A cancelled service can give a right to a fee-free refund for an unused ticket, subject to the applicable conditions and purchase route. Apply to the retailer that sold the ticket and do not claim a refund if you then use that same ticket to travel.
If you travel and arrive late
Southern and Thameslink state that Delay Repay may apply when arrival is delayed by 15 minutes or more. Their published process requires a claim within 28 days and evidence of travel. The compensation depends on the delay and ticket type.
Rail replacement services and accessibility
National Rail says replacement transport may be provided during planned work or unplanned disruption. Passengers need a valid rail ticket. Replacement buses can have different facilities and generally do not accept non-folding bicycles.
For a disabled or elderly passenger, National Rail says the railway may offer options including taxi, minibus, bus, coach or a diverted journey, depending on need and supplier availability. Speak to staff rather than assuming the standard replacement bus is the only option. Assistance dogs are accepted.
- Check whether the replacement stop is outside the station.
- Ask about step-free access, luggage and toilet availability.
- Allow longer than the normal train timetable.
- Do not board an unmarked private vehicle claiming to be rail replacement.
- Use Passenger Assist or station help points where available.
Route-specific backup thinking
| Starting point | Possible issue | Backup information to gather |
|---|---|---|
| Brighton Station | Crowds and high demand after a cancellation. | Exact meeting point, current exit and whether a vehicle can lawfully reach it. |
| Hove | The disruption may affect both the local connection and main line. | Whether reaching Brighton first actually helps. |
| Haywards Heath | You may be north or south of the blockage. | Direction of the incident and ticket acceptance by alternative route. |
| Three Bridges | Connections to Gatwick or London may be changed. | Live departures and the airport deadline. |
| Gatwick Airport | North/South terminal transfer and flight connection. | Flight, terminal, airline instructions and meeting point. |
Avoid splitting a group without a clear plan. Make sure children, elderly passengers and luggage remain with the correct responsible person, and share one lead contact with the driver.
Need a direct backup journey?
Subject to availability, we can quote a pre-booked transfer from Brighton, Hove or Sussex. Send the live location, destination, deadline, passengers and luggage.

Are Brighton to London trains disrupted today?
This article does not claim a current disruption. Check National Rail Status and the operator’s live service page for the exact date and route.
Will the railway pay for my taxi?
Do not assume so. Ask railway staff or the train operator before booking and record any authorisation. Delay Repay is not an automatic refund of a privately arranged taxi.
Can I use my ticket on another operator?
Sometimes ticket acceptance is arranged during cancellation or major disruption. The permitted operator, route and time depend on the live notice and ticket conditions.
Can a taxi guarantee I catch my flight?
No. Road conditions, the remaining time, airport processes and airline rules are outside one operator’s control. Contact the airline if the check-in margin is already compromised.
What should I keep for Delay Repay?
Keep proof of travel, the planned service, actual arrival time and relevant disruption evidence. Follow the operator’s claim process within its deadline.
Where should a taxi meet me at Brighton Station?
Agree a specific lawful point with the operator. Station access and traffic can be busy during disruption, so do not assume the front entrance is possible.
