Know the airport.
Plan the whole journey.

London’s airports are in different locations and use different terminal, rail and pickup arrangements. Start with the airport code on your ticket, then check your flight number, date and terminal. This guide brings the practical checks together for passengers travelling to or from Sussex.

Check the right source. Airport websites provide flight boards, terminal information and airport access guidance. Your airline confirms your baggage allowance, check-in deadlines and booking changes. Sussex Airports Taxis handles your booked road transfer. This guide is independent and is not an airport-operated flight board.

The practical details

Airport-by-airport guide.

LGW / LONDON GATWICK

Gatwick: start with North or South.

Gatwick has two terminals. Check the terminal for your actual flight rather than relying on a previous trip or an airline’s usual location. Gatwick’s airline and terminal directory is a useful starting point.

The free inter-terminal shuttle connects North and South. The shuttle station at the South Terminal is close to the railway station. If you are combining train and taxi travel, make sure your booking says whether you want the airport terminal or a railway-station pickup.

For a Sussex Airports Taxis arrival booking, provide the flight number and follow the meeting instructions on your confirmation. Our usual Gatwick meeting point is M&S in the relevant terminal.

LHR / LONDON HEATHROW

Heathrow: your terminal is part of the address.

Heathrow’s passenger terminals are 2, 3, 4 and 5. A booking that only says “Heathrow” leaves an important detail unresolved: check the flight and terminal before arranging your pickup or drop-off.

Connecting passengers should use Heathrow’s connection guidance. If you remain within the flight-connection process, follow the airport’s purple Flight Connections signs. If you have separate tickets or need to leave the airport, use the guidance for your specific situation; do not assume the same transfer process applies.

For a road transfer to Sussex, follow the driver meeting instructions supplied for your arrival terminal. Allow for passport checks, baggage reclaim and any assistance you have arranged.

LTN / LONDON LUTON

Luton: airport terminal or Airport Parkway?

Luton Airport Parkway railway station is separate from the airport terminal. The Luton DART connects them. Check the destination on your rail ticket and whether the DART part of the journey is included.

If booking a taxi after a rail journey, specify the railway station if that is where you want collection. If you are landing at Luton, book the airport pickup and add your flight number. Follow the meeting instructions for your booked transfer rather than heading to a rail station or car park without checking.

STN / LONDON STANSTED

Stansted: allow for the whole journey.

Stansted’s rail station connects with the airport terminal by lifts, escalators and ramps. Check the official transport page for the service that suits your journey, particularly for early departures or late arrivals.

From Sussex, plan beyond the local road network. A clear road near home does not tell you the condition of the motorway or the final airport approach. Give the taxi operator your flight time and check-in requirements when discussing a pickup.

LCY / LONDON CITY

London City: plan your east London connection.

London City Airport has a DLR connection to the wider Transport for London network. If using public transport, plan the complete journey and any interchanges, rather than just the last DLR section.

For a road transfer from Sussex, consider the approach to east London as well as your departure from home. Check the airline’s arrival guidance and your flight details. If an appointment or onward journey follows your arrival, leave time for baggage and the road journey.

Before leaving Sussex

Build your departure plan backwards.

There is no single pickup time that works for every airport, airline or Sussex address. Start with your airline’s check-in and bag-drop requirements, then add the road journey and a buffer for changing conditions.

Before your travel day

  1. Confirm the airport code, flight number and travel date.
  2. Check your terminal where applicable.
  3. Review check-in, bag-drop and boarding deadlines with your airline.
  4. Record your full pickup address, passengers, luggage and additional stops.
  5. Check your transfer confirmation and tell us about changes.

Before setting off

  • Check the flight status with the airline or official airport board.
  • Review the complete road or public-transport route.
  • Have travel documents, booking details and a working mobile available.
  • Keep essential items accessible rather than buried in the boot.
  • Contact us if a change affects your booked collection.
A delayed flight does not automatically mean you can arrive at the airport later. Confirm any change to check-in arrangements with your airline before changing your transfer.
From landing to collection

Flight arrival is the first step.

The time a plane lands is different from the time a passenger is ready to meet a driver. Leaving the aircraft, border checks where applicable, baggage reclaim and finding the meeting point can all add time.

If you are the passenger

Keep your phone available, follow your booking’s meeting instructions and contact us if your baggage or assistance arrangements delay you. If the flight number, arrival date or airport changes, tell us directly so the road transfer can be reviewed.

If you are meeting someone

Check the official flight board and agree a meeting plan with the passenger. Confirm the correct terminal and current airport collection rules before entering a pickup area. Do not treat the first arrival estimate as a guaranteed time to leave the airport.

Changing flights or airports

A terminal transfer is not an airport transfer.

Moving between terminals at one airport and travelling between two London airports are different journeys. If your itinerary changes airports, plan for the road or rail transfer as well as the flight connection.

One airport, connecting flights

Check the airline’s instructions for your itinerary. Your route through the airport can depend on whether your flights are on one booking, whether bags are checked through and whether you need to enter the UK. Use the airport’s official connection guidance for your circumstances.

Two separate airports

Allow time to leave the first airport, collect bags where needed, travel to the second airport and complete its departure process. Confirm entry and travel-document requirements separately. A road transfer quote does not confirm that a flight connection is achievable.

Plan the details early

Baggage, families and assistance.

Baggage and security

Your airline sets its cabin and checked-bag allowance. Airport security guidance is a separate check. Liquid and screening arrangements can differ by airport and change over time, so check your departure airport and any connecting or return airports before packing.

Current UK hand-luggage guidance ↗

Airport assistance

Request assistance through your airline, travel agent or tour operator as early as possible. The UK Civil Aviation Authority recommends doing so when booking or, if possible, at least 48 hours before departure. Tell your transfer operator about relevant vehicle or timing needs separately.

CAA assistance guidance ↗

Children and extra equipment

Count pushchairs, travel cots, sports equipment and larger bags when requesting a vehicle. Sussex Airports Taxis does not provide child seats. Discuss bringing your own seat and the space needed before booking.

Fees and pickup arrangements

Drop-off, parking and pickup arrangements differ by airport and can change. Check the airport’s official guidance and your transfer quote. Additional stops, extra waiting or changes to the booked journey should be discussed with the operator.

Quick answers

London airport planning FAQs.

Does this page show live flight times?

No. It links to official airport flight information through our airport guides. Check current arrival and departure information with the airport and airline.

Which London airport is best for a Sussex journey?

Compare the complete trip: the flight route and fare, airport access, check-in time, baggage and ground transport. Your Sussex pickup address and flight schedule matter more than a single general ranking.

Can I assume my airline always uses the same terminal?

No. Check the details for your actual flight and date. A previous booking or another route operated by the same airline is not a substitute for checking.

How early should I book the taxi?

Arrange your transfer once you know the journey details, particularly for early flights, larger groups or unusual luggage. Availability is confirmed through the booking process.

What information should I send for an arrival pickup?

Your flight number, arrival date, airport and terminal where relevant, destination address, mobile number, passengers and luggage. Mention any assistance needs that affect the vehicle or pickup time.

Can I use the Sussex traffic map for the entire airport journey?

Use it for the Sussex coverage area. For airports beyond that view, check the complete route separately and allow for changing conditions.

Do you provide meet and greet?

Meet and greet is included with our airport pickups. Follow the instructions supplied for your specific booking and arrival terminal.

What if my flight is changed or diverted?

Contact us with the new flight, date or airport. Flight monitoring helps with arrival planning, but a diversion or changed itinerary may require a different road journey and a revised quote.
